Summer in Rennes works best when you keep the day simple: one compact walking route, one cool break, and one evening event if the programme fits your dates. In 2026, two major seasonal anchors are especially useful for visitors: Exporama, from 18 June to 20 September, and Transat en Ville, from 11 July to 22 August.

Quick answer: the best summer plan

For a first summer visit to Rennes, start with the historic centre, the Lices area, Place de la Mairie and the Parliament of Brittany. Add Exporama if you want contemporary art, Transat en Ville if you want a free open-air concert, Parc du Thabor if you need shade, or Les Champs Libres and the Fine Arts Museum if the weather turns rainy or too hot.

The two key summer events

Exporama: 18 June to 20 September 2026

Exporama is Rennes’ summer contemporary art programme. The 2026 edition brings together around twenty artistic proposals across the city: exhibitions, photography, painting, installations, street art, participatory projects and public-space works.

For visitors, the value is practical. You do not need to plan a full museum day. You can add one exhibition to a walking route, especially around the Fine Arts Museum, Les Champs Libres, La Criée or Frac Bretagne depending on where you are staying.

Transat en Ville: 11 July to 22 August 2026

Transat en Ville is the easiest free summer event to recommend to English-speaking visitors. The festival offers free concerts, shows and workshops on Place de la Mairie and in several Rennes neighbourhoods.

The simple rule: Thursdays are usually in neighbourhoods, Saturdays are the easiest central option on Place de la Mairie. If you are visiting Rennes for only one or two days, a Saturday evening is usually the most convenient choice.

What to do when it is hot

Rennes is not on the coast, so avoid planning a long exposed walk in the middle of the afternoon. Walk in the morning, pause in the shade or indoors after lunch, then go out again in the evening.

Good summer breaks:

  • Parc du Thabor, close to the centre;
  • Les Champs Libres, convenient from the railway station;
  • the quays along the Vilaine;
  • Parc des Gayeulles if you want more space;
  • an ice cream, coffee or tea break in the centre.

A simple two-day summer route

Day 1

Start around Sainte-Anne, the Lices area and the historic centre. Walk to Place de la Mairie and the Parliament of Brittany, then keep lunch central. In the afternoon, choose one option: Thabor, an Exporama exhibition, the Fine Arts Museum or Les Champs Libres. In the evening, check whether Transat en Ville has a central concert.

Day 2

Slow down. Choose one park, one museum or one neighbourhood instead of trying to cross the whole city. If you leave by train, keep the last hour near République, Saint-Germain or the station.

With children

With children, reduce distances. A good summer day in Rennes has three parts: a short city walk, an easy lunch, then a park or indoor place. Les Champs Libres, Parc du Thabor, Parc des Gayeulles and family-friendly Transat en Ville events are the most useful starting points.
